Sustainable Fashion & Textiles - ‘Couture Crafts’.

from £85.00

The primary focus of this series of workshops is nurturing our creativity and encouraging the individual expression of identity through what we choose to wear.

These classes are designed to help us to restore our enjoyment of fashion, in a slow sustainable way.

We consider the reality that there is far too much waste of materials and precious resources involved in the current fast fashion system, so we take time to re-evaluate the garments we already have in our wardrobes and treat them to some TLC and upgrades, helping to prolong their useful life.

‘Customising Clothing’ is the first in a series of workshops combining elements of Couture & Crafts.

What you can expect:

Demonstrations and examples using the following techniques.

  • Adapting garments with couture techniques such as darts, pleating, and pattern features.

  • A brief Introduction to a variety of upcycling methods - Re-purposing materials.

  • Patch & Repair: change buttons, gathers/pleating, new pocket, decorative collars.

  • Decorative Trims: adding a variety of Appliqué and couched details.

  • Putting the ‘Art’ back into fashion with Needlepoint Embroidery and fabric        painting.

  • Visible mending & Traditional Sashiko methods.

**Please note we will not be replacing zips, hand hemming or doing any tasks which require excessive use of a sewing machine. The aim of the classes is to introduce ideas and get you keyed up for creativity and positive fashion change!**

What to bring along:

Please bring 2-3 garments from your wardrobe which you no longer wear or use and that you are happy to take scissors to!

In addition to this if you have a few very small scraps of material that you really like and would want to incorporate in a project you may get a chance to use them during the workshop .

Additional materials and tools will be provided.

The course consists of 4 mini workshops that introduce the various topics and aim to assist you on a journey to making more sustainable fashion choices, giving you the tools required to become a participant in fashion, rather than just a consumer of clothing.
